After Caley Thistle narrowly lost out to St Johnstone yesterday, I got to speak exclusively to new signing Jordan Alonge.
Alonge arrived in the Highlands at the beginning of the month after spending last season in the Highland League with Forres Mechanics, where he scored 14 goals and was the standout in the Forres team, winning their player of the season award. He was also named in SM Media’s Highland League Team of the Season.
Positives to take from defeat
Caley Thistle played well but ultimately had nothing to show for it in the end, but Alonge felt they played well knowing that the Saints had just been relegated from the Premiership at the end of last season.
He also feels that the side finished the game better than they started and could have taken a few of those chances but thinks that the team did well and that there is plenty of positives to take from that performance.
Playing in a new role
Jordan was used in the number 10 role sitting behind the striker while he was playing for Forres last season, however Caley Thistle boss Scott Kellacher has been bringing him on for Billy Mckay to play up top more as a 9 instead, as we saw against Elgin and again today.
Alonge said he is “trying to adjust and help the team out as much as possible to get forward” and that he is “embracing” his new role and has no problem playing there.
The step up
There is a big jump from semi professional football to playing full time however Jordan seems to be coping with the change no problem. He has “always known that he can play at this level” and stated how it is more “fast paced,” “more technical,” and “takes a lot more focus.”
He is enjoying his football just now and has shown promising signs when he has come on so hopefully it will only get better as he gets more minutes in the tank.
Looking ahead
Jordan told me he is “delighted” to be at Caley Thistle due to the ambition that the club now has.
He spoke about how the aim of everyone involved at the club is to win promotion to the Championship as soon as possible and that he wants to contribute towards that goal as much as he can.
